Description

Getting Pregnant is supposed to be easy right? A month or 2 of trying and then, boom, a baby is on the way! Rarely. Getting Pregnant is much more of a dance than that. The events that have to be arranged and carried out on time can only be described as miraculous! Of course for some, this timing is arranged effortlessly and seemingly by accident. But, in the majority of cases, getting pregnant takes some planning, some effort, and lots of good luck!
If you are on an average woman's cycle, one of the 1 million eggs you were born with (women make no new eggs once they are born) is released into one of your fallopian tubes on the 12th - 16th day of your menstrual cycle. In order to get pregnant, your egg must be fertilized by a sperm within about 24 hours. 1 day! Sperm, once inside the fallopian tube, can wait to find an egg for up to 72 hrs, but it’s a 1 day only sale for your egg!
And, trying to conceive gets even trickier than that! The sperm's journey to fertility is a tough one, fraught with challenge and danger! There is the acid level of your vagina (sperm prefer alkaline) as well as your cervical mucus, which, acts somewhat like a net and traps the sperm. Except, for those few magical days each month, when it becomes looser, and the strongest swimmers can make their way through. Then though, they have to choose the correct fallopian tube to swim up to find the egg. And, even if they choose correctly, they still must break through the egg. Getting Pregnant is not an easy trek!
But once one sperm makes it through, he will be the one and only. Once fertilized, your egg will immediately throw up an impenetrable wall that no sperm can break through. Amazing don't you think! It is because of this arduous journey to conception, that getting pregnant is a challenge at times. We're not really working with the best of odds here.

If you do end up getting pregnant, it isn't that likely that you will know for sure until you've missed your period, or more reliably, that you got that positive pregnancy test! The early signs of pregnancy suspiciously resemble those of PMS. Sore, tender breasts, fatigue, bloating. So, it’s a waiting game from here, until about 2 wks or so from now.

If your egg and sperm did end up uniting and making a baby, then a new 9 month journey begins, if not, well, all you’ve got to do is try to conceive again next month, or the next month, or the month after that. It may seem like a long time, but it’s not as though the work is that difficult or unpleasant! If, after a year or so, you are still working at getting pregnant, then you may decide to seek help from an infertility specialist. But until then, lay back and enjoy the trying part!
